This was one of my most important weddings of 2019, as it was my dear cousin’s!
Working in creative fields themselves, Nehe and Ern came to me with prepared colours and we worked on the palette and concept together – muted and earthy, with bright colour accents like red and orange. Everything was planned thoroughly, from the flowers and props, to the bridesmaids’ beautiful outfits and every single ribbon.
The couple are fond of textures, just like myself, so we focused on them, using various types of dried and preserved foliage, prickly and swirly (and dangerously sharp) branches, a lot of fillers, and big open blooms, including giant coloured mums, which is such a rare thing for weddings in Singapore, and I was so happy that Ern wanted to use them.
My biggest challenge was that Ern didn’t want to have many roses in her arrangements and I’m obsessed with roses and use them in all my works. Nevertheless, I took that as a challenge and ensured not to have even a single stalk in the arrangements. It was hard, but there was a good season of all the quirky flowers, so it still looked wonderful.
Taking into the account the minimalistic design of Grace Baptist Church, I came up with a few options for the stage backdrop, and finally we decided to go with a ‘framing’ and ‘growing’ option, which was perfect for the venue of this size.
And one great thing about it – all the flowers got repurposed for the second day of the celebration at the Asian Civilizations Museum.
