What Are Glitch Stems? Singapore's Most Unique Orchid Art

Most flowers look like flowers. Glitch Stems look like someone asked: what if a phalaenopsis orchid was also a painting?

They are. Each Glitch Stem is a real, fresh-cut phalaenopsis orchid stem — hand-painted in the Gathered+Styled studio, individually coloured, gradient-washed, and patterned before it goes anywhere near a vase. No pigment is repeated. No two stems across the entire collection are identical.

Where the Idea Came From

It started somewhere else entirely — furniture, upcycling, the particular satisfaction of finding what a discarded piece can become with the right treatment. Marbling was part of that world. While researching the technique, a pattern kept appearing: florists and growers in England, the US, Australia — working pigment into petals, leaves, roses, stems. The technique existed. Nobody in Singapore was doing it.

That was enough of a reason to try.

Experimenting with different media took time. Some worked better than others. What stayed was what held — the approach that let the flower remain itself while carrying something entirely new on its surface. The phalaenopsis turned out to be the right canvas: a wide bloom, a clean white base, a natural structure that takes pigment without fighting it.

Glitch Stems came out of that process.

How to Use Glitch Stems

In a bouquet

A vibrant floral arrangement featuring pink and peach roses, blue and white GLITCH orchids, pink anthuriums, and tall white delphiniums in a textured white ceramic vase by Gathered+Styled. Free delivery in Singapore.

One Glitch Stem in an otherwise natural arrangement creates an unexpected focal point — the thing a recipient notices and then cannot stop looking at. Several together shift the whole composition. They work with fresh seasonal flowers, with lush green foliage, and on their own in a bud vase.

At events, shoots, and launches

Glitch Stems have appeared in fashion shoots, gallery installations, product launches, and styled dining tableaux across Singapore. They photograph distinctly — a quality that matters when the brief is built around visual content. If you need florals that do something for the image rather than sit in it, they are worth building around.

For weddings

For couples who want something unconventional, Glitch Stems can be woven into bridal bouquets, ceremony arrangements, and table florals. They suit intimate, curated celebrations — the kind where the details are noticed. A painted orchid held alongside white garden roses does something no all-white bouquet can.

On their own

A single stem in a bud vase is enough. No arrangement required.

What to Expect

Glitch Stems are fresh flowers. The phalaenopsis orchids are real, living stems — not dried, not artificial. With proper care (cool room, away from direct sun, water topped up daily) they hold for approximately 3–7 days. Singapore's heat is a factor, as it is with all cut flowers. An air-conditioned space makes a real difference.

Current stems include: Lure (tender pink), Porcelaine (soft white-on-white with pale pigment), Candy Swirl (pink and white candy pattern), and Beryl (emerald and aquamarine). Availability is limited — they are made in-studio, by hand.

For photographers, stylists, interior studios, and event designers, Glitch Stems are available on a wholesale basis, made to specification by colour family and quantity.
